EDIT #2:
And that's as far as I go, folks! I didn't really overachieve with that gun of hers, but it was really hard to read how the hell that thing works from the ref pic and the latest trailer footage.

I uploaded a detail close up:

And here's a stepfile if you're interested:
[link]

Hope you like it!
Lots and lots of hours (8-10, I suppose, might be 1 or 2 more though, so let's say 12) in Corel Painter IX and Adobe Photoshop CS2

* * *
On a more trivial and last note, consider it the counterpiece of this [link] thingy Engelszorn made quite a while back. 'Cept that she's the better artist and all, but I still try to be as good a rival as can be. Bwahahaha!

Copied from a screenshot, of course:

copyright is with Square-Enix and stuff.

[ Doodles of a Mind running loose ]
Ganz ehrlich?

Beneidenswert.
Man I wish I could paint as well as you. How'd you manage to make everything look so smooth?
It's Photoshop-magic, mainly. The fuzzy soft brush, on very low opacity, very low flow, without much size variation. (In Painter I would go with the Flat Color, Circular Dab, low opacity, 80% resaturation, and high bleed value)
Paint over the face like, 50 dozen times, realize you botched the hues and tones, repaint 50 times, smoothen up for hundred more years, /repeat.
Nah, kidding, but normally I don't care much for cleaning up stuff, I really spent A LOT of time on smoothing the image.

Why am I writing all this? Guess I'm a little *proud* I actually KNOW what I'm talking of for a change!
Heh.
